The most emblematic song of Barranquilla’s Carnival is “La Guacherna”, composed by Esther Forero and its best known version is the Dominican Merengue performed by Milly.
The Caribbean city of Barranquilla has entered on Friday in the final stage of its Carnival preparations with the Guacherna Parade, a nightly event of lights that takes place eight days before the official start of the most important popular party in Colombia.
Over three kilometers, more than 15,000 members of folk groups, “cumbiambas”, drums and costumes offer an “appetizer” of the Carnival of Barranquilla, which will take place from March 2nd to March 5th.
For this year’s edition, the Carnival will pay tribute to the 100th birth anniversary of Esthercita Forero, a composer of songs dedicated to Barranquilla and who in 1974 managed to institutionalize the Guacherna parade as an official event of the Barranquilla’s carnival.
